There are many varieties of red and sapphire imitations. It can be said that all kinds of red gemstones can be called imitations of rubies. Various blue gemstones can also be called imitations of sapphire, various green, yellow, orange, purple, Gemstones such as brown are imitations of brilliant sapphire, so in the process of identifying imitations, the gemstones should be observed and tested according to the appearance characteristics of the gemstones, physical and chemical characteristics, to determine whether the gemstones tested are gemstones, and then The color of the gemstone, the absorption spectrum or the trace element test, and finally the name of the variety of the corundum gemstone.

Identification of red sapphire and its imitation

1. Identification of ruby and its imitation

In general, all red gems may become imitations of rubies. The gemstones similar in appearance to the ruby are mainly red spinel, red garnet, red tourmaline, red beryl, red zircon, andalusite and red glass.

(1) Distinguish from red spinel

The color of red spinel is very similar to that of ruby, but red spinel often has a brown hue; there is no pleochroism; full extinction under polarized light, sometimes showing wavy abnormal extinction; refractive index value of 1.72 is less than 1.77 of ruby, and there is no double The refractive index; the relative density value is smaller than the ruby; the absorption spectrum lacks three absorption lines of the blue region; the fluorescence is red but weaker than the red treasure; the octahedral crystal or the negative crystal is visible under the microscope.

(2) the difference between garnet and garnet

The color of garnet is usually darker than ruby, and it is brown-dark red. The garnet is sometimes pale yellowish red and light pink. It is completely extinction under polarizer, but sometimes it is an abnormal phenomenon of four bright and four dark; garnet has no two colors. The spectrum is also non-fluorescent; the spectra of magnesia-alumina and garnet are different from those of ruby, and there is no fluorescence emission line of 693; under the microscope, the acicular rutile needles of the garnet intersect at right angles, and the other group is not in the plane. The three sets of rutile needles in the ruby exhibit an angle of 120° or 60°.

(3) The difference with red tourmaline

Red tourmaline is pink with brown or orange hue; dichroism is very pronounced, dark red/light red, ruby dichromatic is red/orange red; red tourmaline has refractive index values of 1.620 to 1.640 and relative relative density 3.05 is significantly smaller than ruby; birefringence 0.014-0.020 is larger than ruby, and the rear facet of the red tourmaline can be seen in the appropriate direction under the microscope or even the magnifying glass; the red tourmaline also has a needle-like and tubular shape and an irregular flat liquid package. body.

(4) the difference with red beryl

The refractive index value and relative relative density value of red beryl are significantly lower than that of ruby, so the gloss is weaker than that of ruby, and there is no characteristic absorption spectrum and fluorescence.

(5) the difference between red zircon

The red zircon color is usually not bright and pure enough, always with brown or taupe, and the appearance is quite different from that of high quality ruby; the refractive index value cannot be measured because it exceeds the test range of the refractometer; the relative relative density of zircon is high. The weight of the crucible is obviously larger than that of the ruby; the zircon usually shows the characteristic absorption spectrum of 653.5 nm; no ultraviolet fluorescence; the ghost of the post-faceted rib of zircon is easily observed under a magnifying glass or under a microscope; the gemstone girdle is also common due to the brittleness of the gemstone. And the wear and tear of the faceted edges.

(6) the difference with red glass

Glass is a common imitation, full extinction under the polarizer or black cross abnormal extinction; refractive index value is indefinite, usually between 1.45-1.70, occasionally greater than 1.70, usually less than 1.77 of ruby; relative relative density is variable, in 2.60 or so, also less than 4.00 of ruby; absorption spectrum may be completely absorbed except red, may also absorb rare earth spectrum in the yellow and green areas; visible internal features such as bubbles and swirls under the microscope.

2. Identification of sapphire and imitation gemstones

Gemstones similar to sapphire are blue spinel, blue cone, cordierite, zoisite, blue tourmaline, and blue glass.

(1) the difference between the blue spinel

Different from the physical parameters of sapphire, there is only one refractive index value (1.718), full extinction under polarized light, no dichroism, four iron absorption spectra in the yellow, green and blue regions, and internal octahedral crystal inclusions and negative crystals. .

(2) the difference between the blue cone ore

The color characteristic of the blue cone is similar to that of sapphire. It has strong pleochroism. Generally, the top facet is blue, and the parallel waist is observed as colorless, which is obviously different from sapphire blue-green or green-blue. The blue cone has a large birefringence of 0.047, and it is positively polarized. The blue cone mineral dispersion is very strong (0.066), although some of it is covered by body color, but the excellent cut blue cone mine shows a vivid appearance. In addition, the blue cone ore has bright blue fluorescence under short-wave ultraviolet light, while sapphire is inert or weakly fluorescent.

(3) the difference with cordierite

The cordierite has a low refractive index value (1.54-1.55). The surface gloss of the gemstone is weaker than that of the sapphire. The relative relative density value (2.65) rises above the heavy liquid of 3.32 and the sapphire sinks. Significant pleochroism is visible to the naked eye, the top facet is usually blue, and the other two directions are blue-violet and light yellow. Unlike sapphire, cordierite may have absorption bands in the yellow, green, and blue-violet regions.

(4) the difference with the zoisite

The blue-to-purple variety of zoisite is tanzanite, which has strong trichromatic properties of blue, purple and green, and the heat-treated zoisite is only blue and purple. The relative density of the zoisite (3.35) is lower than that of the sapphire, sinking slowly in the 3.32 heavy liquid, and the sapphire sinks quickly. The refractive index of the zoisite is about 1.70, which is much smaller than the sapphire.

(5) the difference with blue tourmaline

The blue tourmaline is gray-blue, the dichroism is very obvious, it is blue/light blue, the dichroism of sapphire is blue/blue-green; the refractive index value of tourmaline is 1.620 to 1.640 and the relative relative density value is 3.05 is significantly smaller than sapphire; The refractive index of 0.014-0.020 is larger than that of sapphire, and the rear facet of the tourmaline can be seen in the appropriate direction under the microscope or even the magnifying glass.

(6) the difference with blue glass

Glass is a common imitation, full extinction under the polarizer or black cross abnormal extinction; refractive index value is indefinite, usually between 1.45-1.70, occasionally greater than 1.70, usually less than 1.77 of sapphire; relative relative density is variable, At about 2.60, it is also less than 4.00 of sapphire; the absorption spectrum can absorb the rare earth spectrum in the yellow and green regions; the internal characteristics such as bubbles and swirls can be seen under the microscope.
