However, there's a growing concern about the long-term effects of wearing high heels on the body. A recent study highlights that women who frequently wear high heels often experience more discomfort than those who don’t, due to muscle strain after removing their shoes. British researchers discovered that when women wear high heels, the heel lifts, causing the calf muscles to shorten. Over time, this habit can lead to a thickening and stiffening of the Achilles tendon, making it harder to walk without them. This explains why many women can stand in high heels for hours but feel pain once they take them off. A study conducted by Manchester Metropolitan University looked at a group of women aged 20 to 50 who had worn heels of 5 cm or higher for over two years. Using ultrasound scans, the researchers found that these women had 13% shorter calf muscle fibers compared to those who didn’t wear high heels. Their Achilles tendons were also thicker and stiffer, making it more challenging to move their legs freely. However, the researchers suggest that simple stretching exercises can help reverse this issue. For example, standing with your toes on the edge of a step, lowering your heels down, and then raising them again can stretch the Achilles tendon. Doing this 20 times a day can improve flexibility and reduce discomfort when not wearing heels.
