A recent study has revealed that women who frequently wear high heels often experience more discomfort than those who don’t, due to the strain on their muscles when they take off their shoes.
British researchers discovered that wearing high heels causes the heel to lift, which shortens the calf muscle fibers. Over time, this habit can lead to a thicker and stiffer Achilles tendon, making it harder to walk without discomfort. The study explains why many women can wear high heels for long periods but feel pain only after removing them.
At Manchester Metropolitan University, researchers studied a group of women aged 20 to 50 who had worn heels of 5 cm or higher for over two years. Using ultrasound technology, they measured the length of the calf muscle fibers and found that women who regularly wore high heels had 13% shorter calf muscles compared to those who didn’t. This shortening makes it more challenging to stretch the legs naturally, leading to increased discomfort over time.
However, the researchers offered a simple solution: stretching exercises. By pointing the toes, lifting the heels, and then lowering them back down, you can effectively stretch the Achilles tendon. Doing this exercise 20 times a day can help reduce the discomfort associated with high heels and make walking easier without them.
