Recently, I was putting the final touches on a Swingset Skirt project, and as I reached the part where I needed to insert the drawstring, I decided to use my usual tool for handling elastic—yes, a safety pin. But this time around, I quickly realized that the safety pin just wasn’t cutting it. Inserting the drawstring felt like it was taking forever! Frustrated, I began thinking there had to be an easier way to get the job done. Determined to solve this problem, I set out on a mission to find a better solution. I visited a local sewing supplies shop and picked up three new tools that promised to simplify the process. These included the Ezy-Pull Bodkin, the Ball Point Bodkin, and the Drawstring Threader. Each tool had its own unique features, and I was eager to see how they performed. First up was the Ezy-Pull Bodkin. It’s a clever little gadget that works by sliding the ring down to open the bodkin, threading the drawstring between the tweezers-like teeth, and then tightening the ring to secure the string in place. While it’s a great tool overall, I found that it was slightly too wide for the 3/8” drawstring casing on the Swingset Skirt. However, I did notice that adjusting the topstitching rows to 1/2” apart might make it workable. Next, I tested the Ball Point Bodkin. Its eye is approximately 1/4” wide, making it ideal for thinner drawstrings or elastic. I found it particularly effective for inserting 1/4” elastic, working beautifully without any hassle. For those dealing with narrower elastic or drawstrings, this is definitely a reliable option. Finally, there was the Drawstring Threader, which I believe is the most efficient tool for inserting drawstrings on the Swingset Skirt. It’s incredibly straightforward to use and has two differently sized eyes to accommodate various drawstring thicknesses. I threaded the drawstring through both eyes, and it made the entire process faster and smoother than expected. If you’re looking for a tool that combines ease and effectiveness, this one is hard to beat. It’s amazing how such simple tools can make a world of difference in your sewing projects.
