The weather's turning cooler, and the days are growing shorter. I can't help but look forward to cozying up indoors and spending more quality time with my sewing machine. This time of year is ideal for brainstorming holiday sewing projects, and today, we’re sharing some festive pajama inspiration along with a roundup of cheerful fabrics. Don't forget to check out Liesl’s Pajama Pinterest Board for even more ideas!
We have three patterns specifically designed for pajamas: two from Oliver + S and one from Lisette for Butterick. The Bedtime Story Pajamas pattern is an easy-to-follow, kimono-style design (no buttons or buttonholes required!) that works beautifully with both woven and knit fabrics. Take a look at this darling pair of hand-me-down Bedtime Story pajamas crafted by Rae.

Next up is the Sleepover Pajamas pattern, which is perfect for both girls and boys. Girls can add cute ruffles to make theirs extra special. Emily and Meredith did a fantastic job creating these examples.

Lisette for Butterick B6296 offers classic women’s pajamas. This pattern includes four views—two tops and two bottoms—and features plenty of delightful details. Liesl shares her experience sewing a set for herself right here.

Several other patterns can easily be transformed into pajamas. For instance, you can turn the School Bus T-shirt and Playtime Leggings into pajamas by adding cuffs, following our guide on how to modify knit patterns. The Field Trip Raglan T-shirt and Lullaby Layette Pants work just as well. If you're left with fabric scraps, why not sew a matching Pajama Storage Bag using the Drawstring Bag pattern from the Little Things to Sew book? It doubles as a gift bag and a reusable storage solution.

For another option, consider the Hopscotch Top paired with the Nature Walk Pants. You can add a lettuce hem to the pants for a touch of flair, either with a serger or a sewing machine. The Hopscotch Dress could also serve as a cozy knit nightgown.

Now comes the fun part: choosing your holiday pajama fabrics! Head to your favorite fabric store and explore quilting cottons, flannels, and knits. There are countless themes to choose from, such as winter wonderlands, winter animals, stars, plaids, and metallic hues. Here are some collections that caught my eye.
These Nutcracker-themed fabrics will have kids imagining sugar plum fairies dancing in their dreams.

Noel by Cotton and Steel is always a hit, featuring prints like winter sweaters, snowmen, and snowflakes.

Peppermint candies and jingle bells bring a playful touch to these holiday fabrics.

Christmas inspires my inner Scandinavian, so I adore these designs for the holiday season.

There’s something magical about the holidays, isn’t there? Whether you’re crafting pajamas for the whole family or simply enjoying the process, it’s a wonderful way to embrace the spirit of the season. Happy sewing, and may your holidays be filled with warmth, creativity, and joy!
